Weather and time

Playa de la Cortadura runs along the open Atlantic side of the isthmus at the southern end of Cádiz, in the far south-west of Spain. The camera looks along the sand and the dunes behind it.

The beach takes its name from the fort at one end of it. A defensive line was cut across the isthmus here in 1810, when a French army sat down in front of the city for two and a half years; Cádiz was never taken, and the Spanish constitution of 1812 was written inside it.

This is the least built-up of the city beaches: dunes rather than a promenade, with the road and the railway running behind them towards San Fernando. Cádiz itself stands at the far end of the spit, founded by Phoenicians as Gadir and usually described as the oldest continuously inhabited city in western Europe.
