Hamdeok Beach, Jeju Island Live Cam

Hamdeok is a beach of pale shell sand between black lava headlands on the north coast of Jeju, off the south of Korea. The webcam looks over the shallows towards the hill at the eastern end.

The colour of the water is a matter of geology: white sand ground from shell lies over dark basalt, and the shallows read as turquoise while the deeper water beyond them stays blue.

Jeju is a volcano, and its coast is lava rock with beaches only where sand has collected. The haenyeo, women who free-dive for shellfish without air, still work stretches of this shore; their craft was added to the UNESCO heritage list in 2016.
