Caroline Bay, Timaru Live Cam

Caroline Bay is the beach and park below the town of Timaru, on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The webcam looks over the sand and the water.

The beach is an accident. Timaru had no natural harbour, so a breakwater was built out from the shore in the 1870s; it trapped the sand drifting up the coast, and a bay that had been rock and surf filled in behind it within a generation.

Little blue penguins, the smallest of the species, come ashore in the port most evenings after dark. The plain behind the town runs inland to the Southern Alps.
