The copper dome of the Monumento a la Revolución rises over the Plaza de la República in the middle of Mexico City. Traffic and pedestrians cross the open ground at its feet.
The structure began as a federal legislative palace designed by Émile Bénard, and the revolution stopped the work with only the steel frame standing. In 1938 the frame was cut down and rebuilt as a monument to the war that had halted it.
Madero, Villa, Carranza, Calles and Cárdenas are buried in the four corner piers, several of whom fought each other in life. A lift now runs to a viewing deck under the dome, and the fountains on the plaza below are in the camera picture whenever they are switched on.
