Plaza de Armas, Osorno Live Cam

The Plaza de Armas is the square at the centre of Osorno, a city of the lake district in the south of Chile. The camera looks across the fountain towards the bandstand and the cathedral tower.

That tower is concrete and deliberately jagged. The cathedral was rebuilt in the 1960s after the earthquake of 1960, which was centred not far south of here and remains the most powerful ever recorded.

Osorno was founded in 1558, abandoned in the face of Mapuche resistance and refounded in 1796. German families were settled here from the 1850s and left behind the cooking, the surnames and the farmhouse architecture the region trades on.
