Weather and time
This fixed camera looks into a peregrine falcon nest box on top of the Clinical Sciences Building at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. The wooden box has a shingled roof, weathered plywood walls and a floor littered with feathers.
The building stands on 83 Avenue in the health sciences area of the campus. Peregrine falcons treat tall city buildings as substitute cliffs, and nest boxes for them have been kept around Edmonton for many years. Conservationists have ranked this rooftop as the second most sought-after nesting site in the city, after the Bell Tower downtown. Falcon eggs here usually hatch in June.
The camera looks straight into the open front of the box, from the back wall down to the wooden perch below the opening. In autumn the box often stands empty, while in spring and summer it can show a nesting pair, eggs and growing chicks.
