Fog sits on Main Street in Highlands, North Carolina, and the white Episcopal church stands at the corner in the right of the frame. Cars fill the diagonal bays on both sides.

The town is on a plateau at about 4,000 feet inside the Nantahala National Forest, one of the wettest places in the eastern United States. Something like eighty inches of rain falls here in a year, which is why cloud so often sits at street level.

A weather panel in the corner of the webcam picture gives the current conditions and the forecast. The shops, inns and historic buildings along this block make up most of the town centre, and the stream comes from a local estate agency.
