The museum occupies the former Southern Pacific freight house on Santa Barbara Avenue, about a quarter mile south of the city's Amtrak station. The line in front of it is the Union Pacific Santa Barbara Subdivision, used by Amtrak's Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner and by a limited number of Union Pacific freights.

The camera keeps one fixed angle. Rust-red museum cars and a tall signal mast stand in the foreground, the tracks bend away toward the station, and a fenced platform runs along the right side. After dark, the lit windows of an Amtrak train stand out against the black sky.
