Sierra Highway runs across this view at Mojave, where the Tehachapi railroad crosses the desert in California. A road bridge carries traffic over the tracks, and power lines run out across the dry hills behind it.

The line over Tehachapi Pass opened in 1876 and connected Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley with the desert and the south; it remains one of the heaviest freight corridors in the western United States. State Route 14 in the frame runs on towards Los Angeles, past the air and space port on the edge of town.

Wind here is constant, which is why the ridges around Mojave carry turbines. A second camera from the same group covers the crossing at Tehachapi itself.
