Weather and time

The Corn Palace stands on the main street of Mitchell, a prairie town in the corn country of South Dakota. The webcam looks at the front of it from across the road.

The murals on the outside are made of corn. Ears in a dozen natural colours are sawn in half and nailed to the walls to a new design every year, along with rye and sour dock for the outlines, and the birds take a share of it by spring.

Towns across the plains built crop palaces in the 1890s to advertise their harvests; this is the only one left. Many of the designs between 1948 and 1971 were drawn by Oscar Howe, a Yanktonai Dakota painter who taught in the state.
