Weather and time
Mendenhall Glacier descends from the Juneau Icefield to Mendenhall Lake in this view from near the visitor center outside Juneau, Alaska. The camera turns between the cracked ice, the grey lake and Nugget Falls on the slopes of Bullard Mountain.
The glacier is about 21.9 km long and lies in the Mendenhall Valley, some 19 km from downtown Juneau, within Tongass National Forest. The lake formed in 1929 as the ice pulled back, and the glacier has since retreated about 2.8 km. Nugget Falls drops 115 m in two tiers into the lake.
Close-ups show pale, crevassed ice squeezed between two dark rock knobs under snowy summits. Wider shots add the lake and a brushy shoreline, while other positions frame the waterfall or the cloudy ridges of the valley. Mountain goats sometimes graze on the slopes above the falls.
