Weather and time
Union Pacific's main line in Kearney, Nebraska, runs west across a wide plank crossing near Central Avenue, with several tracks side by side. A long arched metal shed and low houses stand on the far side of the rails.
Kearney grew up beside the Overland Route, the original transcontinental line that Union Pacific brought here in 1866; a junction with the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad followed in 1871. The tracks in town are the Kearney Subdivision, which continues west toward North Platte and its Bailey Yard, the largest rail yard in the world.
The camera is fixed and looks west from a raised position, over gravel and bare ground. Signal masts, utility poles with overhead wires, a green one-storey building and rows of trees line the far side.
