Weather and time
This view from the platform of the 1923 Caliente depot in Nevada follows the ochre Mission Revival wall and the Union Pacific tracks. An iron fence and a wide rail yard stretch away toward low hills at the edge of town.
The Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, later part of Union Pacific, built the depot in 1923 to designs by the Los Angeles architects John and Donald Parkinson. Caliente was a division point on the Los Angeles to Salt Lake City line, and the tracks here form the Caliente Subdivision. Amtrak's Desert Wind called until 1997, and the building now houses city offices, a library and an art gallery.
A pine and a small roofed notice board stand close to the lens on the brick pavement. The arched arcade and stepped gable rise on the left, while freight trains with tank cars pass behind the black fence on the right.
