Martigny City, Switzerland Live Cam

Martigny sits in the elbow of the Rhone valley, and this webcam looks down on its streets from the hillside above the town. Rue de Rossettan and the Avenue du Grand-Saint-Bernard cross in the middle of the frame.

The town holds a junction of alpine routes: the Great St Bernard pass towards Aosta, and the Col de la Forclaz towards Chamonix. Both were in use long before the roads were paved, which is why a Roman town stood here.

That town was Octodurus, and its fourth-century amphitheatre survives on the edge of the modern streets. The Fondation Pierre Gianadda was built around Roman remains as well and now runs exhibitions through the year, in the canton of Valais.
