Place Centrale was Switzerland's first modern square, built mainly between 1819 and 1914. Behind it are the mountains, as Martigny sits on the hillsides of the Rhone Valley at the foot of the Swiss Alps. The city lies in the Martigny district, near the border with Italy and France.
