Weather and time
The port of Gdańsk works at the mouth of the Vistula where it reaches the Baltic, and the webcam looks over the channel. Tugs, ferries and container ships pass in front of it.
The peninsula on the far side is Westerplatte. The second world war began there at a quarter to five on the morning of 1 September 1939, when a German battleship anchored in this channel opened fire on the Polish depot; the garrison held out for a week.
The container terminal downstream is the deepest in the Baltic and takes the largest ships afloat, cargo that used to be transhipped at Hamburg or Rotterdam. The lighthouse in the picture dates from 1894.
