Kirkenes City Centre Live Cam

Kirkenes stands at the head of the Bøkfjord in the far north-east of Norway, fifteen kilometres from the Russian border. The webcam looks over the low roofs of the town centre towards the water.

Almost nothing here is old. Kirkenes was bombed more than three hundred times during the second world war for its iron ore and its harbour, and what was left of it was burned in the German retreat of 1944; the Red Army took the ruins that October.

The town was rebuilt around the mine, which has opened and closed with the ore price ever since. It is the last port of call for the coastal steamer working up from Bergen, and the street signs are written in Norwegian and Russian.
