Le Morne Brabant, Mauritius Live Cam

The lagoon at Le Morne lies below this webcam, at the southwestern corner of the island of Mauritius. A low wooded peninsula runs across the middle of the frame, with the pale shallow water of the lagoon in front and mountains behind.

Le Morne Brabant, the basalt monolith that gives the area its name, rises 556 metres behind the camera position and is a World Heritage site: escaped slaves took refuge on its summit, and the mountain became a symbol of that history. The lagoon in front is one of the best known kitesurfing waters in the Indian Ocean.

The reef breaks the swell offshore, which is what keeps the water inside so flat. Trade winds blow across it from May to November, which is the kiting season.
