Weather and time
Umbrellas run in rows down to the water at Lido La Pineta, the beach below Tarquinia on the Tyrrhenian coast of Lazio. The camera looks along the sand towards the point at Porto Clementino.
The town on the ridge behind holds the Monterozzi necropolis: some six thousand Etruscan tombs cut into the rock, about two hundred of them painted, and nearly everything known about Etruscan painting comes from these walls. UNESCO listed the site in 2004.
Porto Clementino was built in the eighteenth century to ship alum from the works at Tolfa, a papal monopoly that supplied dyers across half of Europe. The pine belt that gives the lido its name was planted to hold the dunes in place.
