Weather and time
This camera looks down into a white stork nest on top of a disused factory chimney in Frankenberg, a small town in Saxony. Beyond the round rim of the nest, red-tiled roofs, a tall church spire and wooded hills stretch across the frame.
Frankenberg lies on the Zschopau river in the Mittelsachsen district, about 10 kilometres northeast of Chemnitz. The town grew on weaving, cloth printing and dyeing, and the 35-metre chimney, no longer in use, stands on the grounds of a textile printing works that still operates. White storks first raised two chicks here in 2019 and forage in the Zschopau meadows nearby.
The camera is mounted just above the nest, so storks appear close up while the town forms the backdrop. Between late summer and late winter the nest is often empty, though single storks have visited it in winter.
