Weather and time
Rocky shoreline and open water of Johnstone Strait at Strider Rubbing Beach in Robson Bight, British Columbia. Spruce forest frames the left edge of the view, and forested mountains close the horizon across the strait.
Strider is one of the rubbing beaches in the Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, about 20 km east of Telegraph Cove. Northern resident orcas come close to shore here to rub on the smooth pebbles. The reserve is closed to visitors, so these beaches are watched through remote cameras, and a surface camera was set up at Strider in 2020.
The camera holds a fixed view, so the picture changes only with the weather and light. The strait can lie glassy calm or turn ruffled by the wind, and low grey cloud gives way on clear days to blue sky with pink-tinged clouds in the late afternoon.
