Weather and time
White Bay on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands stretches out between two palm trees, with yachts anchored in its turquoise water. Wooden picnic tables under blue umbrellas stand on the sand, and swimmers wade in the shallows.
Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main British Virgin Islands, with fewer than 300 residents. White Bay lies on its south coast, west of the main settlement at Great Harbour. There is no dock on the beach, so visitors from boats anchored inside the reef wade or swim ashore.
The view looks south from a raised point at the back of the beach, over octagonal tables and rows of beach chairs to the water's edge. The hills of Saint John in the US Virgin Islands rise on the horizon about 8 kilometres away. At night the picture turns black and white, showing the empty tables with folded umbrellas.
