Brno, Czech Republic

Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, with about 400,000 residents, and lies at the confluence of the Svratka and Svitava rivers. The historical capital of Moravia, it is today the seat of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court and a major university city. Its skyline is dominated by Špilberk Castle and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, while the functionalist Villa Tugendhat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between 1856 and 1863 Gregor Mendel carried out his pea experiments at the city's Augustinian abbey, laying the foundations of genetics.
