A compass rose is painted on the apron at Triangle North Executive Airport, with light aircraft parked in a line along the taxiway. Flat pine woodland closes the horizon.

The painted rose is a calibration pad: an aeroplane is turned onto each of its arms so the magnetic compass can be checked against a known bearing. The field serves general aviation at Louisburg in North Carolina.

It sits at the edge of the Research Triangle, within reach of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, and takes training and business flights. Pilots use the live view as a weather check, reading visibility and cloud straight off the picture.
