The valley the town sits in was rebuilt after a catastrophe. In March 1913 four days of rain flooded the whole Miami basin, killed several hundred people and destroyed much of Dayton downstream.

What came out of it was the Miami Conservancy District, the first major flood control authority in the country, which built five earth dams with no gates in them: the water is allowed through a fixed opening and the valley behind fills and drains on its own. They have held for a century.
