Weather and time

Morro Rock catches the last of the sunset above the fishing fleet moored in the harbour at Morro Bay, California. Masts and rigging fill the right of the frame, with still water in between.

The rock is a volcanic plug 576 feet high, the seaward end of a chain of nine such peaks that runs inland to San Luis Obispo. It was quarried for stone until 1969, and it is now a reserve for nesting peregrine falcons, closed to climbing.

The Chumash and Salinan peoples hold the rock sacred and retain the right of ceremonial access. Sea otters float in the channel between the rock and the sandspit, and the webcam has them in the frame whenever the tide is slack.
