Sag Harbor, New York Live Cam

Sag Harbor sits on a sheltered bay at the eastern end of Long Island, with a marina in front of the village. The camera looks over the boats towards the bridge on the far side.

This was a whaling port. In the 1840s it had a fleet large enough to rank among the busiest in the country, and it was made a federal port of entry in 1789, one of the first in the new republic; the customs house is still standing.

The whaling collapsed when the fleets moved to New Bedford and then to petroleum, and the village turned to watchmaking and then to summer visitors. The bridge in the picture carries the road across to North Haven and the ferry to Shelter Island.
