Mahall Bomonti, Izmir Live Cam

The Mahall Bomonti tower stands over the Bomonti quarter of İzmir, lit at night as a single enormous screen. The webcam looks across at it with the city and the gulf below.

The site was a brewery. The Bomonti brothers, Swiss confectioners who had opened the first beer factory in the country in Istanbul, built here in 1912; the plant made wine from 1936 and rakı from 1944 until it closed in 2004, and nine of its buildings were kept in the redevelopment.

İzmir is the third city of Turkey and among its oldest, settled for something like eight thousand years at the head of a deep gulf. It was Smyrna in Greek, and several ancient sources put the birth of Homer here.
