Weather and time
Ducks work the shallow water of Laguna de El Oso, a reserve of two lagoons on the plain west of Ávila in Spain. Reed beds close the far bank, and the water level rises and falls with the season.
More than 170 bird species have been recorded here. Greylag geese hold the site in numbers, common cranes and barnacle geese use it as wintering ground, and avocets, black-winged stilts and white storks appear in spring.
The lagoons lie in La Moraña, a flat cereal-growing district where standing water is scarce and draws birds from a wide area. The webcam sits low by the water, which puts the birds at eye level, and a hide on the shore allows the same view from the ground. A small museum in El Oso village covers the wildlife of the wetlands.
