Weather and time

A white stork nest sits on a pole above the rooftops of Ságvár, a village in Somogy County in western Hungary. The camera is level with the rim of the nest, close enough to show the birds at full height.

Storks return from wintering grounds in Africa in late March, lay in April, and have the young flying by August. Hungary holds several thousand breeding pairs, most of them on utility poles fitted with platforms exactly like this one.

The pattern is worth watching because it is unforgiving: a cold wet spell in May can empty a nest in a day. Lake Balaton lies a short way north, and the wet meadows around it supply most of the frogs and voles the pair bring back.
