Penguins, Szeged Zoo Live Cam

African penguins stand about on rock and water at Szeged Zoo, in the south of Hungary near the Serbian border. The camera looks into the enclosure from the visitor side.

This is the only penguin that breeds on the African continent, and it is in serious trouble: the population has fallen from over a million pairs a century ago to a few thousand, hit first by egg collecting and guano stripping and then by the collapse of the fish stocks it feeds on.

Szeged Zoo is the largest in Hungary at 45 hectares, laid out in a pine wood on the sandy ground north of the city. Szeged itself was rebuilt on a ring plan after the Tisza flooded it away in 1879.
