Main Street North, Deadwood Live Cam

Main Street runs along the floor of the gulch at Deadwood, a gold-rush town in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. The webcam looks north over the brick paving towards the Silverado corner.

Deadwood grew in 1876 on land promised to the Lakota by treaty, after gold was found in the creek below. Wild Bill Hickok was shot at a poker table here that August, a few weeks after he arrived.

The whole town is a National Historic Landmark, and the restoration was paid for in an unusual way: South Dakota legalised small-stakes gambling here in 1989 and directed part of the take into preserving the buildings the casinos now occupy.
