Myeongdong Cathedral, Seoul Live Cam

Myeongdong Cathedral, the brick seat of the Catholic archdiocese in central Seoul, stands in front of this webcam. Its spire rises above the plaza in front of the doors, with the office blocks of Jung-gu district standing around it.

The cathedral was completed in 1898 in Gothic revival brickwork and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception. It sits on a low rise above the Myeongdong shopping streets, and the ramp and plaza in front of it are used for gatherings as often as for services.

The plaza fills before Sunday mass and empties quickly afterwards. From this angle the contrast that defines the site is visible in one frame: a nineteenth-century church surrounded by glass towers.
