Playen is a district of Gunungkidul regency in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and the market gives this junction its name. Shops line the right-hand side: a mobile phone store with a lettered sign, a stack of concrete blocks for sale and a stall under a corrugated metal awning. Motorbikes share the carriageway with cars, vans and small trucks.

The view stays fixed on this one stretch of road. A yellow sandwich board at the kerb and the blue tarp on the left are landmarks in every frame, so it is easy to follow how traffic passes in both directions through the day.
