Nantou County lies at the centre of Taiwan and is the island's only county without a coastline; its seat is Nantou City and it has about 470,000 residents. Most of the county is mountainous, and in the south rises Yushan, at 3,952 metres the highest peak in Taiwan, protected within Yushan National Park. Here lies Sun Moon Lake, the largest lake in Taiwan and the home of the Thao people, as well as the mountain resorts of Hehuanshan and Qingjing. Nantou is also known for Dong Ding oolong tea and for Puli, the town at the geographic centre of Taiwan.
