The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and officially unveiled in the United States on October 28, 1886, as a gift from the French people commemorating the alliance during the American Revolution. The statue has a total height of 305 feet including the pedestal, which is another 154 feet tall. Its right hand holds a torch representing enlightenment, and its left hand holds a tablet with the date of the United States Declaration of Independence in Roman numerals: JULY IV, MDCCLXXVI.

The Statue of Liberty is officially known as "Liberty Enlightening the World." It was designated a National Monument in 1924, and Ellis Island in 1965. Both Liberty Island and Ellis Island were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and the Statue of Liberty was included on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1984.
