The tracks beside Santa Fe Depot run north from this view in downtown San Diego, in California, United States. A red trolley car runs on the near track, and the crossing at Ash Street and the blocks of Little Italy fill the middle of the frame.

Four operators share this corridor: the light rail trolleys, the Coaster commuter service up the coast, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner and freight trains. Santa Fe Depot itself, behind the camera, is a Spanish Colonial Revival station of 1915 with a tiled dome.

Trolleys pass every few minutes, the longer-distance trains at intervals through the day. The palms and the low light off the harbour date most frames to the afternoon.
