Detroit Lakes Train, MN Live Cam

A BNSF freight runs behind the crossing at Detroit Lakes, in the view the webcam holds down Washington Avenue in Minnesota. The depot on the far side of the tracks is the other half of the picture.

That building went up in 1907 and 1908 in buff brick on a stone base and was restored in 2010. It is still in use as a stop on the Empire Builder, the Amtrak run between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest.

The line here is the BNSF Staples Subdivision, a main route for grain out of the Dakotas and for intermodal traffic, so the trains are frequent and mostly long. Becker County around the town holds more than four hundred lakes, which is where the summer traffic on the road comes from.
