The Court Avenue District is a block of nineteenth-century brick warehouses converted into bars, restaurants and offices. It fills up in the evening and empties completely by the small hours, which is the state of the street here.

Des Moines is the capital of Iowa, and the gold dome of the state capitol stands east of the river a few streets away. Winter temperatures drop well below freezing, and the ploughs work these downtown blocks through the night.
