Castro Street Live Cam

The corner of Castro Street and Market Street lies below this webcam in San Francisco, in California. A historic streetcar takes the curve below the lens, and café umbrellas stand on the pavement opposite.

The cars on this line are preserved trams from cities around the world, run in their original liveries as part of the regular transport network. The Castro has been the centre of gay life in the city since the 1970s: rainbow flags line the street, and the Castro Theatre with its neon sign stands a block up the hill.

The camera is mounted at a bar on the corner that has been in business since the 1930s. Market Street runs due west from here, so the low sun comes straight down the line of the tracks in the evening.
