Mauritius, Rivière Noire Live Cam

This feed cycles between a dozen places around the coast of Mauritius, from Grand Baie in the north to Le Morne in the south-west. Each view holds for a while and then the picture cuts to the next.

Almost the whole island is ringed by coral reef, which is why the water inside is flat and pale and the surf breaks in a line well offshore. The gaps in the reef are where the fishing boats go out.

Le Morne, the headland at the south-western corner, is on the UNESCO list: escaped slaves took refuge on top of it, and the story attached to the rock is why it was listed. Mauritius had no human population at all until the seventeenth century.
