Weather and time
A fixed camera looks down on the grounds of Hokkaido Jingu Tongu, a small Shinto shrine in central Sapporo framed by tall old trees. A white wooden fence lines the pavement of a wide street in the foreground, with the dark shrine roof behind it.
Known locally as Tongu-san, the shrine was founded in 1878 as a place to worship Sapporo Shrine, today Hokkaido Shrine, whose main grounds in Maruyama were hard to reach in deep winter snow. Its present hall was dedicated in 1910 as the resting place for the portable shrine carried through the city during the Sapporo Festival.
The camera faces the corner of the precinct from across the road, so the street traffic, a parking lot on the side road and the apartment blocks that now surround the shrine all stay in the frame.
