Reykjavík Traffic, Iceland Live Cam

Route 1 passes the lake at Rauðavatn on the eastern edge of Reykjavík, where the city gives way to open ground. The webcam looks south across the water and the plantation beside it.

The trees are planted. Iceland lost almost all of its birch woodland within a couple of centuries of settlement, and the conifers around this lake and in the reserve beyond are part of a replanting effort that has been running since the 1950s.

The road is the Ring Road, 1,322 kilometres of it, which goes round the whole island and is the only link to most of the towns on it. Snow stays on the ridge behind well into the spring.
