Hsinchu County lies in northwestern Taiwan, next to the separately administered city of Hsinchu; its seat is Zhubei and it has about 600,000 residents. It is one of the heartlands of Hakka culture in Taiwan: most residents are Hakka, and old streets survive in Beipu and Neiwan. Part of the Hsinchu Science Park lies in the county, while the mountains of the southeast, home to Atayal and Saisiyat communities, reach into Shei-Pa National Park with the rocky peak of Dabajian.
