Miaoli County lies in western Taiwan between the Taiwan Strait and the Xueshan Range; its seat is Miaoli City and it has about 530,000 residents. Hills and mountains cover most of the county, which has a coastline of about 50 kilometres. Miaoli is one of the heartlands of Hakka culture in Taiwan, known for its spring tung blossom festival, the wood carvings of Sanyi and the strawberries of Dahu. Near Sanyi stand the ruins of Longteng Bridge, a railway viaduct destroyed by an earthquake in 1935.
