Oshikoto Region, Namibia

Oshikoto is a region in northern Namibia with its capital at Omuthiya and about 257,000 residents. It is named after Lake Otjikoto near the town of Tsumeb: this deep sinkhole and nearby Lake Guinas are the only two permanent natural lakes in Namibia. Part of Etosha National Park, including the old German fort of Namutoni, lies within the region. Farmers in the densely settled north grow pearl millet, while the south lives from cattle ranching and from Tsumeb, a town that grew up around a copper mine famous for its rare minerals.
