Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan

Ibaraki Prefecture lies in the northeast of the Kanto region on Japan's Pacific coast, with Mito as its capital and about 2.8 million residents. Lake Kasumigaura, the second-largest lake in Japan, spreads across its southeast, and the twin-peaked Mount Tsukuba rises above the Kanto Plain. Mito is home to Kairakuen, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, and the city of Tsukuba is a national centre of science and research. The prefecture is one of the country's leading farming regions, known for melons, chestnuts and lotus root.
