Pirkanmaa is a region in the inland lake country of western Finland, with more than half a million residents and Tampere as its centre. Tampere, the largest inland city in the Nordic countries, lies on a narrow strip of land between Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi, which are joined by the Tammerkoski rapids. The rapids once powered the city's mills and factories, and its industrial past earned Tampere the nickname "Manchester of the North". Fresh water covers about 14 percent of the region, well above the Finnish average.
