Jämtland, Sweden

Jämtland is a historical province in central Sweden on the border with Norway, a sparsely populated land of forests, lakes and mountains whose only city is Östersund. Östersund stands on the shore of Storsjön, Sweden's fifth-largest lake, where according to local legend a lake monster lives. Jämtland belonged to Norway for more than 450 years until it was ceded to Sweden in 1645. In its western mountains lies Åre, the country's largest ski resort, which has hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships three times.
