Ulyanovsk, formerly Simbirsk, is a city on the Volga and the centre of Ulyanovsk Oblast. It was renamed in 1924 after Vladimir Lenin, whose family name was Ulyanov and who was born here in 1870. Its old centre stands on a high bank above the river, which is crossed here by long road and rail bridges. The writer Ivan Goncharov, author of the novel Oblomov, was also born in Simbirsk, in 1812.
